The Triple Crown
I grew up in Kentucky, a state that boasts a number of fantastic sporting events—University of Kentucky and Louisville basketball games, the NASCAR Quaker State 400, and many others. But the biggest event in Kentucky is, without a doubt, the Kentucky Derby. The Derby is held on the first Saturday of every May and is, arguably, the biggest event in thoroughbred racing in the world. It also kicks off the Triple Crown, a series of three races, which also includes the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Winning the Triple Crown is considered one of the most difficult feats in sport. It’s so difficult that, until American Pharaoh won in 2015, there had been a 37 year drought.
After Justify won the 2018 Triple Crown, I thought it would be interesting to build a data visualization celebrating the success of the 13thwinners. So, here it is. Click on the image to view and interact with the full viz.
